Western Energy Company Rosebud Coal Mine Area F Project

Welcome to the homepage for the Western Energy Company (WECo) Rosebud Coal Mine Area F Expansion Project Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The purpose of this website is to provide up-to-date EIS-related information to the public and other interested parties. Here you will be able to view and download all documents relating to the EIS as they become available to the public. For more information about this project see About the Project. The Draft EIS is now available for review and can be found in the Document Library.

In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and the Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA), the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), Western Region (WR), Denver, Colorado, and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MT DEQ) have prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) which analyzes and discloses the environmental impacts of the proposed action to permit the operation and reclamation of the proposed Area F expansion of the Rosebud Coal Mine.

Available EIS

OSMRE and MT DEQ have prepared a Draft EIS for proposed surface mining operations in Federal Coal Lease M82186 at the Rosebud Mine and have released the Draft EIS for public comment. An electronic version of the Draft EIS can be found in the Document Library. OSMRE was initially accepting written or emailed comments for a 45 day period beginning January 5, 2018 and ending at midnight on February 20, 2018. OSMRE has now extended the public comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement prepared to evaluate the environmental effects of the Rosebud Mine Area F new mining plan. The public comment period was previously set to close on February 20, 2018, but has now been extended and will close on March 5, 2018. All comments must be received or postmarked by March 5, 2018, to be considered. OSMRE and MT DEQ will also conduct a public open house to answer questions and take comments on the Draft EIS and the information found therein on February 13, 2018 in Colstrip, MT at the Colstrip High School Auditorium from 3-7PM. Individuals needing a hard copy and/or CD of the Draft EIS mailed to them can submit a request to Logan Sholar at lsholar@osmre.gov.
