Olympia Area Office

The Olympia Area Office (OAO) is located in Olympia, Washington, and focuses on surface mining regulatory activities for the state of Washington and oversight of the Alaska state regulatory program. The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement is the direct regulatory authority for coal mining and is responsible for all permitting, inspection and enforcement activities in Washington.

The OAO's major responsibilities for oversight of regulatory and AML programs include inspections, enforcement, declaration of AML emergencies, and financial assistance (grants) to the State of Alaska.

A Performance Agreement has been established with Alaska to help measure the State’s success in meeting the goals of SMCRA. A copy of this agreement is available upon request from OAO or from the appropriate state agency. An Annual Evaluation Summary Report for the Alaska program is prepared each year based on this performance agreement. The report is available on OSMRE’s ODOCS website http://odocs.osmre.gov.

For more information about the OAO, please contact Howard Strand at (303) 293-5026.
