ABOUT US The United States Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) is a bureau of the Department of the Interior of the Federal government. The Headquarters' Office is located in Washington, DC. In addition, there are the Appalachian Region, the Mid-Continent Region, and the Western Region offices, as well as several field offices throughout the country. Field offices in the Western Region are located in Albuquerque and Farmington, New Mexico; Casper, Wyoming; and Olympia, Washington. The mission of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement is to carry out the requirements of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) in cooperation with States and Tribes. Our primary objectives are to ensure that coal mines are operated in a manner that protects citizens and the environment during mining and assures that the land is restored to beneficial use following mining, and to mitigate the effects of past mining by aggressively pursuing reclamation of abandoned coal mines.
